Farm-To-Wood
SUSTAINABLE AND RECLAIMED WOOD
Introduction:
At Black’s Farmwood, we believe that great design and sustainability go hand in hand. With over 25 years of experience, we’ve witnessed a remarkable shift in how architects, builders, and homeowners approach exterior wood. Thanks to new and exciting developments in modified and thermally enhanced wood, today’s materials are beautiful, exceedingly stable, sustainably sourced, and built to last. These innovations are changing the game—especially for high-end residential building and remodeling in places like Sonoma, Napa, Marin, and throughout the Bay Area. We’re proud to offer a curated selection of decking, wall cladding, and outdoor wood solutions that meet the highest performance, sustainability, and fire safety standards. Decking Options: Accoya® Decking Accoya is a revolutionary modified wood created through a non-toxic process called acetylation. This enhances the wood’s durability, dimensional stability, and resistance to rot and insects while maintaining FSC® certification and a minimal environmental footprint. Accoya outperforms many tropical hardwoods and weathers beautifully if left unfinished. Benefits: • 50-year above-ground warranty • Exceptional stability (resists swelling, warping, and cupping) • Naturally WUI Class C fire-rated • Ideal for barefoot use and easy to stain or leave natural Thermory® Decking (Thermally Modified Ash or Pine) Thermory’s thermally modified woods are treated with just heat and steam, with no chemicals, resulting in decking that rivals the durability of exotic hardwoods. Thermory Ash offers a rich, dark tone that naturally fades to silver over time. Benefits: • Class 1 durability (equal to Ipe) • Chemical-free modification process • Cool to the touch, even in direct sunlight Ipe and Cumaru Decking Ipe and Cumaru are dense tropical hardwoods renowned for their strength, beauty, and longevity. Ipe carries a natural Class A fire rating, making it a popular choice for fire-sensitive areas. Benefits: • Naturally fire-resistant (Ipe = Class A) • Extreme density and longevity (30+ years) • Rot and insect resistance • FSC Certified options available for responsible sourcing Wall Cladding and Siding: Accoya® Cladding Accoya's incredible stability makes it an excellent material for vertical applications like siding and rainscreen systems. It is available in natural, prefinished, or weathered grey tones. Options: • Smooth or textured surfaces • Shiplap, tongue, and groove, or rainscreen profiles • Class C fire rating Thermory® Cladding Thermory offers thermally modified cladding options, including Kodiak Spruce, Thermally Modified Pine, and Thermally Modified Ash. These products offer striking natural tones and superior rot resistance. Highlights: • Class B or C fire ratings depending on species • Rustic or clear grades available • Naturally weathers to a silver-grey patina ThermaWood® FR Hemlock Cladding ThermaWood FR Hemlock offers the beauty of natural wood with the added peace of mind of fire resistance. It’s thermally modified and treated with fire-retardant to meet ignition-resistant standards for WUI zones. Highlights: • Enhanced fire resistance • Available in various siding profiles • Can be left unfinished or stained for customized looks Reclaimed Weathered Grey Siding Our reclaimed, weathered grey siding is an excellent choice if you're looking for a weathered aesthetic with built-in character and sustainability. This material is FSC® certified and authentically reclaimed, offering a naturally aged patina that brings warmth and texture to high-end residential exteriors. To enhance performance and fire safety, we offer it prefinished with a water-based sealant and treated with Flame Stop II, a Class A fire retardant. When used in conjunction with an approved wall assembly, this makes it a smart option for projects in WUI zones. Highlights: • FSC® certified and responsibly reclaimed • Naturally weathered grey appearance • Prefinished with water sealant + Flame Stop II fire-retardant treatment • Suitable for accent walls, gables, and full exterior cladding FSC® Cumaru: Beauty Meets Performance At Black’s Farmwood, we’re proud to supply FSC-certified Cumaru for high-profile projects that demand performance and sustainability. Cumaru is a dense, resilient hardwood that offers natural durability, weather resistance, and stunning grain patterns. Notable projects we’ve supplied: • Mission Bay Bayfront Park – Adjacent to the Chase Center in San Francisco, showcasing FSC Cumaru decking in a high-traffic waterfront environment. • Uber Headquarters – Nearby, FSC Cumaru was used extensively across the outdoor areas of this LEED-certified campus. Other Exterior Applications In addition to decking and siding, our exterior wood products are ideal for: • Pergolas and trellises • Exterior ceilings and soffits • Outdoor seating and terraces • Architectural features and façade details We offer custom milling, pre-finishing, and expert guidance to help you specify the right product for your project’s climate, aesthetic, and compliance needs. Fire Safety and WUI Compliance California’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) regulations require thoughtful material choices, especially in high-fire-risk zones. Many of our exterior products—including Accoya, Thermory, Kodiak Spruce, ThermaWood FR Hemlock, and our Flame Stop II-treated reclaimed siding—can support WUI-compliant assemblies. Important: Always confirm WUI compliance with your local building department or fire marshal. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction, and we’re happy to assist with documentation or communication as needed.
