Antique Heart Pine Hit Skip Flooring
Longleaf heart pine was once one of the dominant structural woods in America, used in everything from colonial mills to industrial warehouses. It was harvested so heavily that old-growth longleaf pine nearly disappeared. What remains exists almost entirely in reclaimed structures, and salvaging it is now the only way to access wood of this quality, density, and age.
Old-growth heart pine is a very different material than most people expect from the word pine. The heartwood is extraordinarily dense, with tight growth rings that took centuries to form. Its color ranges from golden amber to deep red orange and continues to deepen naturally with age and light exposure. It is harder than many domestic hardwoods and significantly more stable than younger pine. Our hit-skip process preserves the aged surface patina while lightly planing the high points, revealing the wood’s grain and color without removing evidence of its previous life. The result is textured and dimensional without feeling overly rough or distressed. The gallery below shows this flooring in a range of finishes, including Bona Extra Matte, Rubio Monocoat Pure, and unfinished wood, illustrating how the material can read differently depending on the finish and lighting conditions. |
