Surface, Finish, CharacterThe surface treatment is what gives French Oak flooring its reputation. Unlike domestic hardwood, which is simply sanded and finished, our French Oak collections undergo a deliberate aging and distressing process that enhances the wood's natural character rather than conceals it.
Wire brushing opens the grain and accentuates the oak's natural veins, producing an undulated surface with softly rounded edges and a texture you can feel underfoot. Hand distressing adds deeper marks, chipped edges, and surface variation that mirrors the natural wear of historical materials. The most heavily distressed collections, handcrafted by French artisans, feature an uneven surface with cracks, discolorations, and oil stains that give the floor an authentically aged appearance from the day it is installed. All collections are finished with natural hardwax oil that penetrates the wood rather than sitting on the surface, enhancing the grain and color while allowing the floor to be spot-repaired and refreshed without sanding the entire surface. |
Construction, Pattern, and Design FlexibilityFrench Oak flooring is available in both solid and engineered construction, both FSC®-certified, giving you the flexibility to specify the right option for any installation condition. Engineered French Oak is particularly well-suited to radiant heat systems, concrete subfloors, and California's climate variations, where the dimensional stability of an engineered core outperforms solid wood.
Beyond the standard straight plank installation, French Oak is also available in chevron and herringbone patterns, as shown here. These traditional European laying patterns work exceptionally well with wide plank French Oak because the live-sawn face reveals different grain orientations as the planks change direction, creating a floor with genuine visual depth and movement that a standard installation cannot achieve. All collections are available in a range of custom color finishes, from light and bleached to deep and fumed, and can be specified for residential and commercial projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
