What are Engineered Wood Floors?Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed from a solid hardwood veneer bonded to multiple layers of cross-ply plywood. The alternating grain direction of the plywood layers creates a floor that is significantly more dimensionally stable than solid wood, resisting the seasonal expansion and contraction that affects solid hardwood in California's climate.
Engineered flooring can be installed in a wider range of conditions than solid wood. Thicker profiles of 9/16 inch or more can be nailed or stapled down over a plywood subfloor, floated, or glued down over concrete. Thinner profiles are typically glued down, similar to a resilient floor installation. Thicker engineered floors with a substantial wear layer can also be sanded and refinished, significantly extending the floor's life. |
Why Choose It?Unfinished engineered hardwood is the right choice when you want the appearance of solid hardwood but need greater installation flexibility or dimensional stability. It performs better than solid wood over radiant heat, on concrete subfloors, and in spaces where humidity fluctuates seasonally, all common conditions in California residential and commercial projects.
Because the surface is unfinished, you control the final color and sheen entirely. A custom stain mixed on site will always match your space more precisely than any factory finish, and it allows the floor to be seamlessly integrated with existing floors, cabinetry, or millwork. For projects with sustainability requirements, we offer FSC®-certified unfinished engineered flooring with CARB Phase 2 compliant plywood cores and non-toxic adhesives, meeting the indoor air quality standards required for LEED certification and similar green building programs. |
Reclaimed Wood as EngineeredOne of the more common misconceptions about reclaimed wood flooring is that it is only available in solid form. At Black's Farmwood, most of our reclaimed flooring collection is also available unfinished, engineered, giving you the authentic character, patina, and history of antique barn wood with the dimensional stability and installation flexibility of engineered construction.
This makes reclaimed wood a practical choice for installations over concrete, over radiant heat, and in commercial spaces where a floating installation is required. Every engineered floor we offer is constructed with non-toxic adhesives and CARB Phase 2 compliant plywood cores. Custom widths, grades, and surface character are available to match your project specifications.
