SELECTING FLOORING

Selecting the Right Hardwood Flooring

Choosing the right hardwood floor is one of the most important material decisions in any residential or commercial project. The species, grade, grain orientation, construction type, and finish all affect how the floor looks, performs, and ages over time. At Black's Farmwood, we have spent decades helping homeowners, architects, designers, and builders navigate these decisions, and we carry the full range of options to match any design intent, budget, and performance requirement.

The first question is not which species or finish. It is what kind of wood best suits the project. Reclaimed hardwood brings history, patina, and a sustainability story that no new floor can replicate. Traditionally milled FSC®-certified hardwood offers the beauty of new wood with a verified responsible sourcing chain. French Oak imported directly from Europe brings an Old World warmth and surface character that domestic species simply do not match.

Which Sustainable Wood Flooring Should I Choose?

Sustainability and beauty are not competing priorities. At Black's Farmwood, we offer three distinct paths to a responsible floor. Reclaimed wood gives new life to material that has already served one purpose, carrying a sustainability story embedded in it. FSC®-certified traditionally milled hardwood comes from forests managed for long-term ecological health, with verified chain of custody documentation available for LEED and green building projects. French Oak imported from Europe is FSC®-certified and finished with zero-VOC natural oil finishes that are better for indoor air quality and the environment.

The right choice depends on the design, the performance requirements, and what matters most to you about the material's origin.

Reclaimed Wood Flooring

Reclaimed wood flooring is the only floor with a life before yours. Every plank was salvaged from antique barns, tobacco-drying structures, industrial warehouses, and historic buildings across the United States, bearing the grain, patina, nail holes, and saw marks of a previous existence.
Choose reclaimed wood if you are looking for:
Natural Character: Grain patterns, knots, face checks, and surface texture that only decades or centuries of aging can produce.
Storied History: Wood sourced from structures with a documented past, where the material itself is the story.
Rustic Patina: Deep tones, weathered surfaces, and an authentic aged appearance that no new floor can replicate.
Sustainability: Giving new life to wood that has already served one purpose, with no new trees harvested.
Reclaimed Barn Flooring: Tobacco barn oak, threshing floor boards, and barn siding with distinctive saw marks, nail holes, and heritage character.

Unfinished Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Unfinished engineered hardwood flooring gives you the look of solid hardwood with greater dimensional stability, making it the right choice for a wider range of installation conditions. Available in square edge or micro-bevel tongue and groove profiles, it can be custom finished on site to match any design specification. Choose unfinished engineered hardwood flooring if you need:
Versatile Installation: Suitable for floating or gluing down over concrete subfloors.
Enhanced Stability: Engineered construction performs well over radiant heat systems and in environments where solid wood would be vulnerable to moisture movement.
Support for Wide Planks: The layered plywood core minimizes seasonal movement and expansion, making wide plank installations more stable.
Custom On-Site Finishing: Sand and finish on site to achieve a seamless, perfectly matched color and sheen across the entire floor.
Most of our flooring is available as unfinished engineered hardwood, giving you maximum flexibility for any project.

Unfinished Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring is 100% natural wood from face to back, and unfinished solid allows you to sand and finish on site for a perfectly seamless result. It can be refinished multiple times over the life of the floor, making it one of the most durable and long lasting flooring investments available. Choose unfinished solid hardwood flooring if you want:
Custom On-Site Finishing: Achieve a perfectly matched stain, oil, or finish color across the entire floor with no factory finish lines or sheen inconsistencies.
Traditional Installation: Nail down over a plywood subfloor for a stable, time tested application.
Long Term Durability: Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, extending the life of the floor for generations.
100% Natural Hardwood: Solid wood construction from face to back, with no plywood core or veneers.
Nearly all of our flooring is available unfinished, giving you complete control over the final look and finish.

Prefinished Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Prefinished engineered hardwood arrives ready to install, with a factory applied finish that is often harder and more durable than a site applied finish. It is the right choice for projects where minimizing installation time, dust, and fumes is a priority, or where the space cannot be closed off for sanding and finishing. Choose prefinished engineered hardwood flooring if you want:
Easy Installation: Ready to install with no on-site sanding or finishing required.
Superior Factory Finish: Factory applied finishes are cured under UV light, producing a harder and more durable surface than most site applied alternatives.
Zero Disruption: No sanding dust, no finish fumes, and no waiting for the floor to cure before the space can be used.
Wide Range of Colors and Textures: Pre-applied finishes in a variety of tones, sheens, and surface textures including wire brushed, smooth, and hand scraped.
Most of our flooring is also available as prefinished engineered hardwood, giving you maximum flexibility for your project.
