Antique Hickory Flooring
Hickory is one of the hardest domestic hardwoods, dense and impact-resistant in a way that few flooring species can match. It was a natural choice for barn construction across the American Midwest, which is where we source it today. Many of these boards stood for more than a century before being reclaimed.
What makes hickory visually distinct is the dramatic contrast between heartwood and sapwood within the same plank. The heartwood ranges from deep brown to reddish tan, while the sapwood can appear pale and almost creamy by comparison. That shift can happen gradually across a board or abruptly within a few inches, creating movement and contrast that cannot be replicated in new material. The variation is inherent to both the species and the age of the wood. The result is a floor with more visual movement than oak or pine, one that works especially well in spaces where the material is meant to be noticed rather than disappear into the background. The gallery below shows this flooring in a range of finishes, including Bona Extra Matte, Rubio Monocoat Pure, and unfinished wood, offering a sense of how differently the material reads depending on finish and lighting conditions. |
