Beech is one of the harder domestic hardwoods, dense and durable, making it an uncommon but compelling choice for flooring. It is also genuinely rare as a reclaimed material. These boards come from antique tobacco barns throughout the Midwest, structures that are becoming increasingly difficult to source as they disappear from the landscape.
The wood has a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from oak or pine. The base color is a light warm cream with subtle pink and brown undertones, while the grain remains relatively tight and consistent compared to more heavily figured species. The result is a floor that feels both historic and quietly contemporary, light enough to open a space without reading as generic or overprocessed. Because aged beech and maple can share similar color and grain characteristics, boards may include a natural mix of both species. The visual transition is subtle, and the floor's overall character remains consistent throughout.
