Black walnut is one of the most prized domestic hardwoods in North America, valued for centuries in fine furniture, cabinetry, and architectural woodwork for its color, figure, and workability. As a flooring option, it is less common than oak, which is part of what makes it so distinctive.
The heartwood ranges from warm medium brown to deep chocolate tones, often with undertones of purple, gray, and olive running through the grain. In contrast, the sapwood is pale and creamy, creating natural variation that cannot be replicated through staining or artificial processing. The grain is typically straight, with occasional curl or figure, and the wood carries a natural luster that responds especially well to oil finishes and low-sheen treatments. Our black walnut is selectively harvested from well-managed North American deciduous forests, selected for quality, consistency, and responsible sourcing. Compared to many domestic hardwoods, black walnut has a richer and more dramatic appearance while still feeling refined and architectural. It works particularly well in contemporary interiors, libraries, studies, and quieter spaces where warmth, depth, and natural materiality are central to the design.
