American cherry is one of the more distinctive domestic hardwoods, prized for centuries in fine furniture and cabinetry for its color, figure, and the way it changes with age and light exposure. As flooring, it offers something noticeably different from oak or walnut, warmer and more luminous, with a character that deepens naturally over time.
The heartwood begins as a light pinkish tan when freshly milled and gradually darkens to a richer reddish brown as it is exposed to light. The sapwood is lighter and creamier by contrast, and when present, it adds natural variation and movement without overwhelming the overall appearance. The grain is typically straight and fine, giving the floor a smooth, refined surface that responds especially well to oil finishes and low sheen treatments. We live-saw our cherry from mature, sustainably harvested trees, which produce a mix of grain orientations within each plank, creating a more natural, varied appearance than rift- or quartersawn material alone.
